Music

One of the most beautiful things we can give our child is music education.

Gloria Estefan

Music is at the heart of our curriculum in Wherwell. We have a dedicated music teacher, Mrs Elmslie, who teaches music once a week to all years and runs the choir once a week. Additionally, she teaches woodwind instruments to those wishing to learn. We also offer Listen 2 Me to all the children in years 3 and 4, which enables them to try an instrument for a whole term and perform in an end of term concert to their parents. Last but not least, we offer a comprehensive variety of instrumental lessons taught by dedicated staff from The Hampshire Music Service who visit the school to teach smaller groups of violin, brass and guitar, to name just a few.

Why do we learn Music?

  • To perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
  • To learn to sing and to use the voice, to create and compose music alone and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
  • To understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.
