Class 4

Welcome to Class 4

Welcome to the Class 4 webpage.  It is on this page that you will find electronic versions of class communications.  We also plan to provide an insight into life in Class 4; posting videos and pictures of what we are up to.  What's more, the children will be asked to write for the site on occasion.  The content will obviously build up as the year progresses.   I hope it is useful.  Mr B

Visit to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

As part of their WW2 - Battle of the Atlantic topic, the children from class 4 visited Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. They had the opportunity to get a real flavour of Britain's Naval History and had hands on experience in learning Morse Code. This highly interactive trip was an invaluable asset to their extra curriculum activities and the enhancement of their learning experience.

Solar Farm Visit

Dance Festival at Test Valley School

Class 4 children enjoyed their Thursday joining other schools from the cluster at a Dance Festival. They spent the morning working on their dance and the afternoon performing it in front of all the other schools attending. Thank you to all the volunteer drivers who transported the children to and from the event and to Test Valley School for organizing the event and for being such welcoming hosts as always.

Battle of the Atlantic

Battle of the Atlantic 1

Our very grateful thanks to Commander Tall who visited Class 4 this week to talk about the Battle of

the Atlantic. The children were fascinated by his first-hand account of life on a submarine.

Tri Golf

A group of children from class 4 had fun in the sunshine on Wednesday afternoon taking part in a Tri-Golf session at Broughton School.

Visit to Sustainability Centre

Developing their topic on natural resources, Class 4 travelled to the Meon Valley to explore renewable energy, low-carbon building and water conservation.  The children got to see the inside of one family's permanent tent-house, re-enacted water collection in an Indian slum, used wood to build, and viewed many energy creating/saving devices.  This is the first of a two-part investigation; the second being a visit to a solar farm on 1st July.

This term we are working with a dragon theme in Literacy.  So far we have done a lot of story writing - working on specific aspects of composition, such as creating character and setting.  We have also been tackling grammatical points, including punctuating direct speech and varying our sentence structure.

Most recently, we have been writing poetry and creating our own play script based on the book The Dragon Machine by Helen Ward.  We have taken this simple book and created parts for characters and a narrator.  We have also learnt about, and made shadow puppets to perform our play; ensuring that the play script included plenty of stage directions for the puppet actors.  We have posted some pictures from our performance below.

Linking with our topic of Around Europe, we have also written non-chronological reports .  One of these is attached below in the form of a PowerPoint.

In Numeracy, we have been focused on Place Value, Addition-Subtraction and Measurement.  We enjoyed the challenge of creating a range of different weights - all made from clay, when the only weight we were given was a 100g.

Just before the break, we visited The Sir Harold Hillier Gardens near Romsey.  We had a great day, considering both the Art in the Garden sculptures that were on display, and creating our own temporary natural sculptures.

We have been working very hard in Spring term on our punctuation and sentence construction.  Here we are using actions to help us remember the patterns of the text and the vocab.

With our Iron Age topic we visited Andover Iron Age Museum and Danebury Hill Fort.   The combined visits gave us a fantastic insight into Celtic life.

At Danebury we explored the footprint of a roundhouse and saw the fantastic defensive mounds that once made up a series of ramparts.

In Science we focused on working scientifically to find out which variable determines the speed of a marble within the marble run.   We used different kinds of marbles - classifying them according to their properties - and then recorded their speeds.  We drew graphs from the timings recorded.  We decided it was weight that was the most significant variable.
